I enjoy being part of the of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, which has been challenging and inspiring. Last spring I was honored to be selected as co-winner of the 2014 Soloist Competition (more here). I performed the first movement from Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole at the Spring Concert on May 4, 2014. This competition did not involve coaching, but there were many rehearsals. It is actually rare for a student to have the opportunity to perform the same concerto movement with two orchestras over the same time period. It was a great experience. Mr. Hattner is a conductor with a fine ear for style and rhythmic accuracy, and it was an honor to work with him on the Lalo. It was especially inspiring to have the camaraderie and support of my peers in the orchestra onstage. The musicians in PYP are some of the best in Oregon, and it was a privilege to perform the Lalo with so fine an orchestra.
